Construction Safety Staffing
Advastar has staffed safety and environmental compliance roles for contractors, owners and industrial operators
Construction safety and environmental compliance staffing for active jobsites
Advastar provides construction safety staffing for contractors, owners and industrial clients who need qualified EHS people on site, not in a corporate office writing policy. We place site safety managers, safety coordinators, EHS directors and the environmental compliance staff who keep a project’s permits in good standing, on a direct-hire, contract, contract-to-hire and payrolling basis.
Safety hiring is usually triggered by something specific. An EMR that has moved the wrong way and is now costing work at prequalification. An insurance carrier asking questions. A general contractor requirement for a dedicated full-time safety professional on a job that was previously covered part time. A recordable that turned into an OSHA inspection. Each of those calls for a different person, and the candidate who is excellent at building a culture over three years is not necessarily the one you want walking a site next Monday.
The credentials in this field are also easy to misread. CHST, OHST, ASP and CSP sit on a progression and mean different things about scope and experience. Ten-hour and thirty-hour cards are training, not qualification. Site-specific requirements stack on top: MSHA for aggregates and mining-adjacent work, TWIC for port and maritime facilities, DISA and reciprocal safety council membership for petrochemical and refinery sites, HAZWOPER for remediation. We verify every card and clearance against the issuing body before submittal, because a safety professional who cannot get through the gate on day one is worse than no hire at all.
We also staff construction environmental compliance, which sits alongside safety on most projects and is frequently the same person’s responsibility. SWPPP inspections and stormwater compliance, dust and air permits, spill prevention plans, waste characterization and manifesting and the remediation oversight that comes with brownfield and demolition work. Advastar has more than 60 years of combined staffing experience, and our construction desk understands that on a live site, safety and environmental are operational roles rather than administrative ones.

Construction safety and environmental roles commonly supported
Company-level safety leadership accountable for EMR, insurance cost, program design and multi-site consistency. Often hired after a serious incident or when safety performance starts affecting prequalification.
Site environmental staff managing permits, SWPPP and stormwater inspections, dust and air compliance, spill prevention and waste manifesting on active construction projects.
Safety professionals for refinery, petrochemical, power and plant environments. Confined space, LOTO, hot work permitting and the reciprocal safety council and DISA requirements those sites carry.
Senior corporate roles combining safety, quality and risk. Hired when the function becomes a board-level concern rather than a departmental one, usually through a confidential search.
HAZWOPER-certified staff overseeing contaminated soil handling, abatement coordination, monitoring and disposal documentation on demolition and redevelopment sites.
Hands-on safety staff supporting a manager or covering a smaller site. Toolbox talks, inspections, documentation and the day-to-day enforcement that determines whether a program is real or on paper.
Trainers and onboarding coordinators running orientations, competent person training, equipment certification and the documentation that has to survive an audit.
Full-time project safety leads running the safety program on a single jobsite: orientations, daily walks, JHAs, incident investigation and the relationship with the owner’s safety representative. The most frequently requested role on this desk.

Frequently asked questions about construction safety staffing
Site safety managers, safety coordinators and field safety specialists, corporate EHS directors and managers, industrial and turnaround safety professionals, safety trainers and environmental compliance staff working on active construction sites.
Yes, and it is a large part of this desk. Turnarounds, outages, single projects and seasonal stormwater coverage are all commonly staffed on contract. We handle payrolling as well if you have already identified the person.
Against the issuing body, before submittal. CHST, OHST, ASP and CSP through BCSP; OSHA outreach and trainer cards through the training organization; MSHA, HAZWOPER and NFPA 70E through the certifying provider. We do not take a resume line item as evidence.
The 30-hour card is training, not a professional credential. It tells you someone sat through a course. CHST, ASP and CSP are certifications with experience requirements, examinations and continuing education behind them, and they sit on a progression. We explain where each candidate is on that progression rather than listing acronyms.
Yes. Those sites carry access requirements that stop most placements before they start: DISA testing, TWIC clearance, reciprocal safety council membership, site-specific orientations. We confirm every one of them before a candidate is submitted so nobody gets turned away at the gate.
Median is about 14 days for a site safety manager, and faster where clearances are already in hand. Corporate EHS leadership searches take longer, typically four to six weeks.
Yes, and it is a common trigger for these searches. We screen for candidates who have documented an experience modification turnaround rather than simply managed a stable program, and we ask what actually changed – program, staffing, reporting discipline or all three.
Yes, for construction sites specifically. SWPPP and stormwater inspection, dust and air permit compliance, spill prevention, waste characterization and manifesting and HAZWOPER-certified remediation oversight on demolition and brownfield work. On most projects this is the same person’s responsibility as safety.
No. Our environmental work is construction site compliance and remediation oversight tied to an active project. Environmental consulting, environmental science and corporate sustainability hiring are outside what this desk does well.
Yes. Turnaround staffing is scheduled work with a hard start and a hard finish, and we plan clearances, mobilization and demobilization against the window rather than treating it as an open-ended contract.
Yes. Replacing a safety director is sensitive by nature, particularly after an incident, and we run those searches without your name attached until there is mutual interest.
We recruit nationally across the United States, with active safety placements in 41 states, including traveling and per diem assignments for turnaround and industrial work.
